The way it was when they took it to the street

The following is an excerpt from the new book Muscle Car Confidential: Confessions of a Muscle Car Test Driver by noted automotive journalist and frequent Inside Line contributor Joe Oldham. Muscle Car Confidential: Confessions of a Muscle Car Test Driver is available at www.motorbooks.com.
They say the first street race between cars occurred the day the second car was built. I think there’s a lot of truth to that old tale. Who of you hasn’t gunned it to beat out the guy next to you at a green light at least once in your life? Some of you probably more than once if you’re reading this book. It’s a rite of passage that has been going on for eons.
Today, they make movies about street racing. “The Fast and the Furious” is essentially about import tuner cars street racing in Los Angeles. There have been many others over the years.
Yet, no one ever spoke about street racing out loud. Not in the muscle car era of the ’60s.

Ontario government officials say harsh new street racing legislation is working well, despite reports that only about one third of all charges have resulted in prosecutions. ”There’s pros and cons to any legislation, but overwhelmingly I believe it’s good legislation,” said Rick Bartolucci, minister of community safety and correctional services.
In October, the province introduced amendments to the Highway Traffic Act to target street and stunt racers. The new law gave police the power to impound vehicles and suspend licences for one week on the spot.
Included in the definition of a street or stunt race was anyone travelling more than 50 km/h over the speed limit.
That stipulation has, albeit inadvertently, put a new face on the traditional image of a street racer. For example, those snared by the legislation in recent months include an 85-year-old north Toronto man, an on-duty garbage truck driver in the rural southwest and two police officers from the Peterborough area.
Widower calls for end to street racing in Detroit

Forest Bryson hopes a murder charge levied this week in the street race that killed his wife sends a message to other racers: Stop competing on the streets of Detroit.

Describing himself as a Christian who believes in forgiveness, Forest Bryson still wants to see justice for the November death of his wife, 55-year-old Detroit Public Schools education technician Delthea Bryson.
“The citizens of Detroit are subjected to this, and they can’t even just drive home safely with this type of activity going on,” Bryson said today. “This kind of thing can’t continue in our town. It’s illegal. It’s irresponsible. And it’s got to stop.”
Troy McRae, 40, of Belleville pleaded not guilty Monday to second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in 36th District Court in Detroit in connection with the Nov. 12 accident. Investigators say McRae’s 2005 Mustang GT was speeding down Dequindre near Canfield at 6:30 p.m. when it hit Delthea Bryson’s car. Her daughter, Krystin, who had returned home to Detroit from Atlanta to attend graduate school a few weeks before the crash, is still recovering from a broken shoulder, Forest Bryson said.

Racing and the Street - A Deadly Combination

Street Racing seems like the most affordable way to get the automotive adrenaline rush all us enthusiasts crave. What member of America’s youth doesnt get off to hot girls, fast cars, and free rides? What seems like fun and games to some, hoewever, is serious business to others. Not only is racing on public streets illegal in all 50 states, it is the most dangerous and selfish act the youth of today is getting involved in.
Taking off after WWII when the youth returning from war had extra money and a need for speed to go with their new mechanical know-how, street racing quickly evolved into one of America’s top killers in today’s society. Inspired and revived by the Fast and the Furious movies, street racing has contributed to a frightening level of fatal crashes. Fatal crashes related to street racing has increased by more than 85% every year for the past 6 years. From 1999 to 2000, San Diego, CA has seen an increase of 97% of fatal crashes caused by street racing. Still sound like fun and games?
In the state of Florida, pedestrian injuries related to street racing has increased by 222% from 1999 to 2001. The leading cause of death for people ages 16-20 is automobile accidents. National averages show that for every 1000 street racers, there are 49 innocent by-standers who are injured or killed. So why do kids street race?
Both American Racing Wheels and American Racing Rims come from the industry standard company called American Racing Equipment company that has over 50 years of experience in the racing wheel and rim industry. They offer all kinds of wheels for a wide variety of vehicles including SUVs, muscle cars, trucks and other off-road vehicles.
They have more than just wheels and rims. They have a large assortment of accessories including metal signs, poster, stickers, banners, care product, replacement gear, headwear, shirts as well as jackets for men and women. All of this can be found at their online store and at various other outlets.
Founded in 1956 by Romeo Palimedes, an early paceleader in drag racing, he collaborated with J. O. Ellison who owned a machine shop. Together they created the next generation in drag racing wheels using a revolutionary design that included magnesium that had a high ratio of strength to weight. These made his wheels like no others on the market. Collaborating with Tom Griffith next, they started a company that has become part of racing wheel and rim history.
A new street racing law went into effect today in Ontario and the first offender was stopped 60 seconds later. The young man stood crying as his mother’s car was towed and impounded by police while another driver was stopped after being clocked at 174 km/h.
A total of 24 people had their cars and licenses suspended in the first 24 hours of the new law going into effect. The law now means that cars will automatically be impounded for 7 days, driver’s licenses are suspended for a week, and a minimum fine of $2,000 is imposed for anyone caught driving 50 km over the posted speed limit.
Ontario residents say it is about time something was done about the escalating street racing on Toronto city streets and Ontario highways. When a truck driver lost his life on highway 400 north of Toronto in June, Ontario residents had reached a boiling point.
Save Money on Your Sports Car Auto Insurance

There is no better felling for many people than being able to go purchase that sports car of their dreams. The bad thing is that some dont realize how much their auto insurance on such a car will cost them, and so they end up not being able to even legally put the car on the road, because they cant afford to insure it and make the payments. To help save money on your auto insurance when you have a sports car, there are some things that you can do, so keep reading.
Your auto insurance rates are directly impacted by your credit rating, so if you have a low score or have only had credit established for a few years, then odds are, your sports car auto insurance rates will be pretty high. To boost your credit rating, payoff all of those high interest credit card debts, and clean up any past due debts that you may have had turned in against you, before you apply for insurance. This way, you will have a better chance of getting a more affordable rate.
Track Offers Alternative to Street Racing

HIGH school students who bring their prom tickets to Atco Raceway here can get in free on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for Street Nights, when teenagers with a need for speed can try legal racing on Atco’s tracks. All that is required is a car, a helmet and a passion for the rush between burnout and shutdown on a quarter-mile track.
It’s not your standard prom after-party; it’s an increasingly popular alternative to shore runs and house parties.
On a recent Thursday night at Atco, 18-year-old Nicole Garrano adjusted a safety harness across her narrow frame, tucked her blond ponytail into her helmet and rolled her customized blue Camaro to the top of Staging Lane 1.
Street Racing for Dummies

I have never understood the drive behind young adults who feel the need to press the pedal to the metal. Sure, I know there is an adrenaline rush whenever you do something that is seen as dangerous or against the law. Is that what these boys were seeking last week when their race led to the death of a mother of two? What is it about testosterone that seems to override the brain between the ages of 16-30 (many would argue the first number to be much lower and the second to be much higher). I’m sure there is remorse for their actions. They will live the rest of their lives knowing that two small children will never be the same. They know that a family was torn apart and will forever be scarred by the sudden loss.
Should we just move on from here declaring, “boys will be boys?” Just like teen promiscuity, they’re going to do it anyways so we should just provide them some safety. Along with high schools handing out condoms they should also hand out some checkered flags with instructions for “safe racing.” That seems to be right in line with the logic I hear all too often. It’s the kind of logic that makes a city like Fresno #1 in the state for teen pregnancies. That’s an accomplishment we can be proud of!
